How Payment Rings Work

Payment rings are based on NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, the same core technology used in contactless payment cards and many public transportation systems around the world.

Unlike smartwatches or battery-powered devices, payment rings use passive NFC technology. This means the ring itself does not require batteries, charging or an internet connection to perform payments.

Instead, the ring becomes powered for a fraction of a second when placed close to a contactless payment terminal. The terminal generates an electromagnetic NFC field that temporarily activates the chip inside the ring, allowing the payment to be completed securely.

Inside the payment ring is a small NFC chip connected to an antenna that runs around the inside of the ring. Because of this antenna placement, the payment is typically performed by slightly bending the fingers and lowering the flat side of the ring toward the NFC reader or payment terminal.

Payment rings are designed to be water resistant and always available on the user. Since they do not require batteries, charging cables or internet access, they can function as an always-on payment companion that is ready whenever needed.

Passive NFC payment rings offer several practical advantages:

  • No charging required
  • No batteries to replace
  • Water resistant construction
  • Fast contactless payments
  • Always available on the hand
  • Simple and minimal user experience

As wearable payments continue to grow globally, payment rings are becoming an increasingly popular alternative for users looking for a more seamless and convenient way to pay.

FAQ

Do payment rings need batteries?

No. Passive NFC payment rings do not require batteries or charging.

How do payment rings get powered?

The payment terminal generates an NFC field that temporarily powers the chip inside the ring during the payment.

Are payment rings waterproof?

Most payment rings are designed to be water resistant because they do not contain charging ports or batteries.

Do payment rings require internet connection?

No. Payment rings do not require their own internet connection to complete payments.

Why do payment rings require a specific tapping angle?

The antenna inside the ring runs around the inner part of the ring, meaning the flat side of the ring typically provides the best communication with the NFC reader.
