Are Payment Wearables Safe?

Payment wearables such as payment rings and payment bracelets are designed using the same contactless payment infrastructure and security standards used by modern contactless payment cards and mobile wallets.

One important security advantage of payment wearables is that they do not display sensitive card information such as the full card number, expiration date or CVV code on the outside of the wearable. This can reduce the risk of card information being copied or visually exposed compared to traditional physical payment cards.

Most payment wearables also use tokenization technology. This means the wearable does not store the actual card details directly on the product. Instead, a secure payment token is used during transactions to help protect sensitive payment information.

If a payment wearable is lost, the wearable can typically be paused or removed through the Tapster app or by contacting the connected bank. Importantly, pausing or removing the wearable does not affect the physical payment card connected to the wearable.

Once the wearable has been paused or removed, it can no longer be used for payments unless it is reactivated or reconnected to payment card.

Like contactless payment cards, payment wearables may also require PIN code verification for purchases above certain transaction limits. In many countries this limit is commonly around €50, although the exact amount may vary depending on the country and bank. The PIN code used is typically the same PIN connected to the physical payment card linked to the wearable.

Because passive NFC payment wearables do not require batteries, charging ports or internet connections, they can also offer a simpler and more secure hardware design with fewer external components.

Modern payment wearables combine convenience with established payment security infrastructure, making them an increasingly trusted alternative for contactless payments worldwide.

FAQ

Can payment wearables be hacked?

Payment wearables use the same payment infrastructure and security technologies commonly used for contactless payment cards and mobile wallets.

What happens if I lose my payment wearable?

The wearable can usually be paused or removed through the Tapster app or by contacting the connected bank.

Does removing the wearable affect my physical card?

No. Removing or pausing the wearable does not deactivate the connected physical payment card.

Do payment wearables show card details?

No. Payment wearables typically do not display full card details on the outside of the product.

Do payment wearables require PIN codes?

For larger purchases, payment terminals may request the same PIN code connected to the linked payment card.
